Yesterday, shortly after our Solstice ritual, the ancestors and Gods approved a name for our House: House Sankofa.

Sankofa is not a Norse word. It is an Akan word that encapsulates the idea that 'it is not taboo to reclaim and restore those threads that have been sundered."

Ours is a Norse house but here there is a place for anyone working hard to restore their ancestral traditions. Here there is a place for anyone devoted to service to the Gods and ancestors and land. Here all are family. Xenophobia after all, is not one of the Nine Noble Virtues.

Congratulations on receiving a name for your House. As I recall there is a Norse tradition when someone gives you a name, they also give you a gift. Do you have a gift for the House planned? Since the name speaking of threads, a tapestry may be in order.

The symbol is a traditional symbol for the concept of "Sankofa."

Concerning House Sankofa - consider the name as Galdr.

From Thorsson's 'Rune-Song' (p. 37):

Sankofa = san-ko-fa

san = sowilo-ansuz-nauthiz = guiding-awareness-necessary

ko = kenaz-othila = creative-order

fa = fehu-ansuz = dynamic-awareness

My rede: san = connecting with our Ancestors; ko = they reveal the sundered threads and we restore them; fa = those threads become vital and energized once more.

Another redeing:

san = sowilo-ansuz-nauthiz = kevels turning; we take in what is offered, make it part of us, and return it to the World with our 'flavor/essence' added; all done in response to compelling need

ko = kenaz-othila = physical transformation/change in physical state in harmony with Ancestral Spiritual Power

fa = fehu-ansuz = dynamic power communicated

The word 'sankofa' may be rooted in a different culture, but the energy essense of the sound speaks as clearly to the Northern Tradition.
