Today, for the Loki Project, I’m going to share with you one of my absolute favorite images of this beloved Flame-haired God: the portrait of Loki from Edgar and Ingri D’Aulaire’s “Norse Gods and Giants,” which was recently republished as “D’aulaire’s Book of Norse Myths.”
This book was probably my first introduction to Norse cosmology. I poured over it as a child, mostly for the illustrations which present a stark, raw set of worlds no less compelling for their roughness. Even then, when I was very small, Loki was my favorite “character” (for I didn’t realize at seven and eight that this had been my ancestral religion or that one could worship and venerate these Holy Powers; still, I felt the draw). This remains one of my favorite books, it is my favorite collections of illustrations in any published work on the Norse Gods, and it’s in my top five favorite children’s books. I’d recommend it for any of my readers with children. It’s well written and the illustrations are mesmerizing.
Anyway, I would love to hear from my readers. Please let me know what your favorite images of Loki are (and feel free to post links).
