Today, for the Loki Project, I’m going to share with you one of my absolute favorite images of this beloved Flame-haired God: the portrait of Loki from Edgar and Ingri D’Aulaire’s “Norse Gods and Giants,” which was recently republished as “D’aulaire’s Book of Norse Myths.”

This book was probably my first introduction to Norse cosmology. I poured over it as a child, mostly for the illustrations which present a stark, raw set of worlds no less compelling for their roughness. Even then, when I was very small, Loki was my favorite “character” (for I didn’t realize at seven and eight that this had been my ancestral religion or that one could worship and venerate these Holy Powers; still, I felt the draw). This remains one of my favorite books, it is my favorite collections of illustrations in any published work on the Norse Gods, and it’s in my top five favorite children’s books. I’d recommend it for any of my readers with children. It’s well written and the illustrations are mesmerizing.

Anyway, I would love to hear from my readers. Please let me know what your favorite images of Loki are (and feel free to post links).

This is one of my favorite illustrations in that book, too.

After seeing Marvel's Thor when it came out, my youngest son became fascinated with the Norse myths, and he begged me to buy this D'Aulaire's book for him. So I did, and thus began a very strange, wonderful journey of making connections, reading, and discussion between us, that continues to this day.

This book brought my son and I a lot closer than I ever would have imagined.

I don't remember ever having this book as a child, and yet the image is incredibly familiar to me. Huh. Anyway, since you invited others to share their favorite images of Loki, I thought I'd share this one:

It's by an artist on DA named LadyNorthstar. I love how he's crouched like a predator with that devious little scarred sneer.

That's an awesome picture of Loki! I will have to print it out and try to draw it. (another great book by the D'Aulaires is D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths. As a child, I feel in love with Greek mythology and Hestia because of that book).

My fav pic of Loki is by Thalia Took. Thalia has an interesting story about Loki too ;)

I will take that book as a good recommendation. :) I loved mythology as a child, but was most taken by Greek, not having much in the way of access to the other myths. I couldn't tell you anymore when I'd first heard of the Egyptian or Norse gods.

My favorite image of Loki I posted the other day on my blog. I just think it's stunning.

I remember this book! I'm not sure what happened to my copy of it, though.

Galina, your best luck is to click through the picture. I linked it to her original post on tumblr. There should be a link to ask her questions. If you can't find it (I have trouble sometimes on her page), I can request her e-mail or forward yours to her.
